CENTER FOR BETTER LIVING
THE AMOUR' HOUSE, was established in 1984 by Bishop C.L. Long, Pastor, of Scripture Cathedral Church for the purpose of assisting shaw community residents with food and clothing. He operated a Feed The Hungry Program where poor, homeless and disadvantage residents were given daily hot and nutritional meals. This program received local and national acclaim and publicity from several major publication for the number of persons who were served. This program grew in volunteers, clients and services offered. Several years later a counseling program was included. These services were supported by Scripture Cathedral Church volunteers and finances.
In 1993 the Amour' House was incorporated as a non-profit, tax exempt, and charitable organization. The Board of Directors of Amour' House, Inc. are composed of volunteer community leaders who have demonstrated a concern and love for the fellowman.
In January 1996 The Amour' House, Inc. reorganized to serve the community with comprehensive programs. The Amour' House, Inc. is operated by volunteer staff, with funding coming from donations and grants from individuals, corporations, foundations, and special fund raising events.
WHAT IS OUR MISSION?
Amour' House, Inc. reaches out in love to improve the quality of life for poor and disadvantage youth, adults and families in the metropolitan District of Columbia area through crisis intervention services and family assistance.
WHAT DO WE OFFER THE COMMUNITY
Amour' House, Inc. provides the following services to the community on a emergency and regular schedule. These services include but are not limited to the following:
FEED THE HUNGRY- provides food and clothing to individuals and families in need. This program sponsors mass feeding for the hungry who desire this service.
EDUCATIONAL ENRICHMENT – this program offers tutorial, computer, GED, and other courses, activities, and instructions that do provide academic reinforcement, advancement, remediation, and enrichment for the community.
COUNSELING – in seven different areas. They are Drug and Alcohol Addiction, Marriage and Family, Financial, and Bereavement and Guidance through individual and group sessions. We encourage clients to confront their problems, modify their behavior, learn to function effectively, become self-sufficient and independent.
STREET MINISTRY – to identify and assist those individual and families in the community, to redirect their lives to a more positive way of life.
PRISON MINISTY – developing a median for reaching women and men incarcerated in correctional treatment facilities. To provide positive communication network with their families and society prior to their release.
RECREATIONAL PROGRAM – to provide athletic activities, summer camp, and field trips for the community to assist them in coping with the perplexities of time, to develop morals, to build self-esteem, and provide a strategy for conflict resolution.
EMPLOYMENT AND CAREER DEVELOPMENT – trains clients to prepare a resume, SF171, and employment applications, develop interview skills, provide employment referrals and maintain a listing of vacancies in public and private agencies. Provide word processing and computer training for career advancement.
WHEN DO WE OFFER
We are open for regular services to the community Monday – Friday from 10:00AM – 7:00PM and on Saturday from 10:00AM – 3:00PM. There are various special events which may effect our normal hours of operation. We also offer a twenty-four (24) hour telephone Hot Line service for emergencies only. Please call before you arrive for service
WHAT ARE OUT AREAS OF SERVICES?
We provide services to the District of Columbia, Maryland, and Virginia metropolitan areas.
WHO IS ELIGIBLE FOR SERVICES?
Our services are provided to all children, youth, adults, seniors, and families regardless of age, sex, race, color, religious affliation, or any other requirement. Clients voluntarily demostrate a need for service.
WHAT ARE THE FEES OR COST OF SERVICES?
The services provided are totally free fo any charge or fees. Although some clients do make donations after reaching a certain level of success.
